Skating is one of winter’s great delights. Childreneagerly lace up their skates to race, whirl and twirlon frozen ice, barely aware of the long historybehind the fun.
Five thousand years ago, ancient Scandinavianstied bones to their boots and used poles to pushtheir way across frozen lakes. Metal bladesappeared around the 13th century, and theDutch popularized skating as an essential formof winter transportation. The British followed in the17th century, and skating soon became a favouritepastime—fuelled by European settlement in theNew World.
Celebrated First Nation’s artist Corrine Hunt has brought her distinctive vision of traditional Kwakwaka’wakw and Tlingit forms to create these special-edition collectibles. Every design is visual poetry that gives the time-honoured traditions of conservation and respect a contemporary voice with powerful lines and well-honed economy in composition.
2011 is the International Year of Forests—a time to reflect on the significant role the wilderness plays in reducing global warming and preserving the earth’s environmental balance.
