The Grey Cup® game, the championship of Canadian professional football, is the country’s single largest annual sporting event, attended by thousands and watched by millions every year. We are proud to commemorate the truly Canadian icon that is the Grey Cup with a limited edition proof silver dollar.
When the Right Honourable Albert Henry George Grey, the 4th Earl Grey, became Canada’s 9th Governor General, wanted to leave a mark on the country’s sporting landscape, he donated a namesake trophy,Lord Grey’s silver chalice, to Canada’s Rugby Football Championship, the precursor of the Canadian Football League™(CFL)
Designed by Bensimon Byrne, your coin features a stylized image of the Grey Cup Trophy mounted on its large base, set against a detail from the engraved text on the face of the Grey Cup. Embossed against this background is the number “100” in celebration of the 100th Grey Cup Game, the words “Grey Cup/Coupe Grey,” the face value, “Canada Dollar” and the year, “2012.”
