90 Years of Remembrance
It was the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918 when the Allies and Germany reached a cease fire to end four years of unprecedented horror and destruction in the "war to end all wars."
Roughly three years prior to this historic turning point, a poem written by a Canadian Medical Officer serving in Flanders fields (Belgium) touched the world with its anguish and imagery. The poppy had long been known to flourish in the lime-rich soil of battlefields, but it was JohnMcCrae'spoem that transformed it into the symbol of remembrance that Canadians proudly wear every November.
