This 1990 Canadian $20 Avro Lancaster Sterling Silver Coin is part of the first ten-coin series commemorating the Powered Flight in Canada: The First 50 Years. Each coin commemorates an aviation hero and his achievements. These coins are composed of sterling silver and have a 24 karat gold covered cameo portrait of an aviation hero. This coin is the second coin in the series and features the Avro Lancaster bomber.
The Avro Lancaster was an incredibly important component of the Allied attack on Europe as it was used very successfully as a heavy night bomber. After the war this craft was heavily used in the aerial mapping of Canada. The cameo on this coin features Air Commodore John Fauquier, D.S.O.**. He received two major overseas decorations and inducted into the Aviation Hall of Fame.
