During World War II, the Invasion of Holland forced the Dutch royal family into exile. They sought refuge in Canada, Ottawa, to be exact. For Canada’s efforts to safeguard their family, Princess Juliana (later on became queen) thanked the country with a personal gift, which was composed of 20,000 tulip bulbs. This beautiful gesture became an annual floral showcase that is still held today in what is known as the Canadian Tulip Festival.
The Royal Canadian Mint celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Tulip Festival with this 2002 Gold Tulip Sterling Silver Coin. This exquisite 50-cent coin features a superb 22-karat gold-plated tulip design on the reverse and comes encapsulated in Royal Canadian Mint clamshell case lined with flock covered in a custom graphic sleeve
